It was an interesting growing season and harvest for sugar beets this year, with 2016 being a record year for tonnage. There was an estimated 31 – 31.5 tons per acre, however lots of fall rain pushed that number to an average of 33.4 tons per acre in comparison to 32.3 tons/acre in 2015, and 30.4 tons per acre in 2014. It has been an interesting and challenging year for Sidney Sugars, Inc. and area beet growers. Most recently, a breach in Lower Yellowstone Irrigation Project's main canal south of Sidney stopped irrigation water from Intake downstream. Coffer dams installed by Franz Construction and LYIP returned water to the Savage area, with approximately 5400 acres able to receive water.
