  • Richland County has "Interesting" Harvest in 2014

    Tim Fine|Oct 22, 2014

I guess the most appropriate word to use for the 2014 harvest in Richland County is interesting. Not necessarily bad, not necessarily good, just interesting. When the barley harvest started in July, it looked like everything was going to be good and maybe even terrific. The winter wheat that actually made it through the winter was looking good and for the most part the barley could have been classified as phenomenal. I remember visiting fields to certify them for the noxious weed seed free...

    Donna Goff|Oct 8, 2014

Listening to all the news about this incident, we have noticed that the NFL is being blamed and, if you really listen, the victim is also being publicly flogged for st...

Levi Turner, who had come to the Elmdale community before 1905, became postmaster in 1912. The Elmdale Post Office had been established by Mrs. C.P. Goodwin. She had chosen the name Elmdale because of all the large elm trees on their homestead. As more homesteaders moved in, a Star Route was developed and Levi found it necessary to spend much time helping his wife. A new lumber house with four bedrooms was built and the old log kitchen which served as a post office also housed a supply of...

  • Prairie Fare: How Do You Define These Food and Agriculture Terms?

    Julie Garden Robinson|Jun 4, 2014

I overheard an interesting conversation the other day. I don't make it a practice of eavesdropping, but they were talking rather loudly nearby. My ears perked when the topic moved to food. "I'm going gluten-free because I need to lose some weight," one of them said. "I gained weight when I went gluten-free," the other noted. "Really?" she replied with surprise. I wanted to jump in and agree that gluten-free isn't necessarily a weight-loss diet, but I ate my breakfast and read the newspaper. As...
