From highway to water concerns, Richland County Commissioner Loren Young expressed his feelings during a meeting with representatives from the office of U.S. Sen. Steve Daines, R-Mont., on June 13. Young said that despite the oil industry slowdown, Highway 200 between Sidney and Fairview remains more busy than portions of the Interstate. “It’s one of the major feeders for the Bakken,” Young noted. Although he feels government agencies try their best to finance highways, he thinks a speci...

When public meetings are held regarding the Lower Yellowstone Irrigation Project in Sidney June 28 and in Glendive on June 29, people can expect to see more people speaking against the irrigation dam than at previous similar meetings. In a blog for the Defenders of Wildlife, one of the two national environmental groups wanting to remove the dam, it states, “Working with our partners and with experts on the fish living in these rivers, we are developing a ‘no dam’ alternative for the Corps and t...
In 1964, a group of eighth graders, led by their social sciences teacher, Bill Burnison, set out to create a model of historic Fort Union. It served as their contribution to the Fort Union Days Centennial Celebration, which took place June 11-13 that year in Sidney. Starting in February, six students worked on the model. They started out by visiting the site where Fort Union had stood to study the terrain, and they gathered sandstone and cedar from nearby badlands. Construction took place in the junior high shop. The gathered sandstone and...
Sundheim Park is always one of my top recommendations to people looking to spend some time outdoors. Having grown up in the area, the Fairview Bridge was enchanting to me in my teenage years because of its enormity and preserved state. Back in those days, you had to go tie hopping and I distinctly remember the rush as I crossed the entire 1,320' expanse; 100' above the water, my heart would start pounding being so high up, but I would make myself stop and look around at how small everything...

Twelve Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) traps have been set in Sidney parks and at the golf course, given to the city by APHIS; the traps are bated with pheromones, which sit in a white cup at the bottom of the green cylindrical traps. EAB is a very small destructive beetle that is responsible for the decline of tens of millions of ash trees around the United States and Canada, including Minnesota, and Colorado, and City Parks Superintendent Steph Ridl feels that it isn't a matter of if they invade Monta...
Paddlefish anglers with a yellow harvest tag that are anxious to fish on the Yellowstone River or Missouri River downstream of Fort Peck Reservoir in 2016 need to be aware of two issues. First, for anglers with a yellow paddlefish harvest tag, opening day of paddlefish season is Sunday May 15; however the first harvest day is Tuesday May 17. This oddity of opening day results from designated Catch and Release days (Sunday, Monday, and Thursday) and mandatory Catch and Harvest days (Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday). Thus, in 2016, the...
The North Dakota Game and Fish Department closed the state’s 2016 regular paddlefish snagging season, effective at 9 p.m. Central Daylight Time, on Monday, May 9. Snaggers are reminded that Sunday and Monday are snag-and-release only. The 2016-18 fishing proclamation allows for the Game and Fish director to close the snagging season early if it appears the harvest will exceed 1,000 paddlefish. “Snaggers this year have been extremely successful,” said Greg Power, fisheries chief. “In addition, similar to last year, a high proportion of this ye...

Before hitting the river, paddlefish anglers should be aware of a new requirement this year. Anglers harvesting a paddlefish anywhere in Montana are now required to report their harvest within 48 hours. Anglers not reporting a harvested paddlefish will not be eligible to purchase a paddlefish tag the following year. Options for reporting a harvested paddlefish include on-site where the fish was harvested (like the fish cleaning station at Intake Fishing Access Site) or a phone hotline. Those wishing to report their harvest by phone must call 1-...
Sidney Sugars agricultural manager Duane Peters is very pleased with how the sugar beet season is starting out. “We’re having a good spring right now, which hopefully will lead to a very good harvest.” In the first year of a three-year contract, 33,500 acres have been contracted, 25,527 of which were planted as of May 2. The 7,000 acres, which were planted early, are now emerging. The contracted acres are up from 30,900 last year due to several factors including the prices of other commodities and the stage in farmers’ 3 year rotatio...
The American Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture has presented its ninth annual Book of the Year award to Susan Grigsby for “First Peas to the Table.” In this lighthearted story, a little girl, Maya, and her classmates learn about gardens and peas, as well as Thomas Jefferson’s garden at Monticello. Ainsley and Kamdyn McFarland from Billings stood in line for an hour at the Accurate Ag Book booth at the IDEAg Trade show, waiting for Grisby to sign their book. The girls and their parents were there as part of the American Farm Bureau Annua...
