  • Richland County 2017 Harvest Below Average

    Tim Fine|Oct 25, 2017

Most years, the terms "mixed bag" or "very variable" pretty adequately sum up how small grain and hay harvest went in Richland County. I do not know for sure what the average yield was for small grains in Richland County but I do know in many instances, farmers were using more fuel to run their combines across their fields than they were getting in bushels per acre. What started out as a fairly promising spring ended up turning...

  • Shake, Rattle and Roll

    Lois Stephens|Aug 16, 2017

Tender footed me has never experienced major weather upheavals. Hurricanes, tornadoes, tsunamis, earthquakes, forest fires, and other natural disasters or weather phenomena all belong in the realm of ‘they happen to someone else, far far away from here’. No longer. I can now say that I have lived through an unwanted natural geological event, even if I had no idea at the time what on earth I heard or felt. Every so often, earthquakes have a habit of jolting residents of Montana. Virginia City suffered through a major earthquake in the early fif...

  • Supporting Producers During Tough Seasons

    U.S. Senator Steve Daines|Jul 26, 2017

Generations of Montanans have cultivated the land and passed family farms and ranches down to their children. Their work has built Montana’s economy and preserved a way of life that still defines our state today. But with the ground cracking underneath us, we are reminded of how fragile this way of life is. As our number one economic driver, Montana agriculture has supported our economy through seasons of plenty and seasons of drought, including physical drought and unseasonable rains. In Montana we’ve seen them both and our farmers and ran...

However, this day has more behind it than simply a free cooldown for fairgoers.
