The Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) has confirmed Montana’s first influenza cases of this season. As of October 2, 2012 a total of four cases have been confirmed in Park and Yellowstone counties. The individuals are two teens and two adults. This is earlier than in 2011 and 2010 when the first cases were not confirmed until late November. Sidney native Jim Miller has returned to Richland County as the game warden for Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks. The Sidney High School graduate brings a wealth of experience with him having been stationed in Missoula, Glendive, Forsyth, West Yellowstone, Livingston and Gardiner. On September 1, 2012, the Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) started its fall smoke management program. Open burners are required to burn only during the time periods specified by DEQ, which can be obtained by visiting DEQ’s website at www.burnclosures.mt.gov or calling the DEQ Ventilation Hotline at 800-225-6779.
