Terry Cayko may just have soil pumping through his veins. His career of farming spans a lifetime and he has no plans of retiring. It’s his passion. His family’s tradition. And something he’s darn good at. As owner of 6J Farms Incorporated, he was recognized by Sidney Sugars on Jan. 15, at St. Matthews Church during an appreciation banquet that recognized area beet growers in varying categories. Cayko was recognized as the top producer in the “large, over 247 acres” category. This is the third...

Location: Northeast Montana near today's Snowden Bridge just west of the confluence of the Missouri and Yellowstone rivers. In the evening of a day that saw the Corps of Discovery cross into what would become Montana, Captain Meriwether Lewis put words to paper and commenced the first written history of Montana. Heretofore everything was oral. What follows are some of those sentences, excerpted from the original journals of Lewis & Clark as penned April 27, 1805: "This morning I walked through...
The imposing Rocky Mountain Front defines the eastern flank of Montana’s mountainous domain before it flows into open terrain to the east. On the north, it stretches 460 miles from Browning and the east slopes of Glacier National Park to the North Dakota line just beyond Sidney. Somewhat less defined, the central boundary begins in the valley of the upper Musselshell River, near Harlowton, and reaches for 300 miles to our state’s eastern edge. On the south, it is 250 miles as the golden eagle glides, from Red Lodge and the east face of the Bea...

Reprinted from the Cartwight History Book: Cartwright can boast of the only railroad tunnel in North Dakota. In the summer of 1911, the Great Northern Railroad started to build the tunnel by the Yellowstone River. This was one structure that was begun at the top instead of the bottom. The top half was put through first. It was put through by hand with the aid of dynamite. The dirt was hauled out with one horse and a small car on rails. The horse had a syrup pail with a lighted candle in it, fast...
The ditches are drained and it's time for paperwork and construction at Lower Yellowstone Irrigation Project (LYIP) according to project manager James Brower. The accounts are being finalized, with personnel going through last year's audit and preparing for this year's. Staff has just finished verifying water assessment dues and new property owners. That information is given to the county courthouses so they can send out water assessments. In addition to routine maintenance, LYIP crews will be...
The Montana Department Fish, Wildlife, and Parks is on a strange mission to impose a free-roaming bison herd in Eastern Montana. It’s puzzling because it’s a plan that few Montanans want, and a large, diverse majority oppose. Yet, inexplicably, Governor Bullocks’ administration and FWP Director Jeff Hagener seem determined to give us a dose of a bitter medicine we don’t want or need. The opposition to free-roaming couldn’t have been more evident at a recent FWP meeting on the issue in Lewistown. One after another, ranchers, sportsmen...

The results are in!
