The 62nd Annual National Hard Spring Wheat Show will focus on a variety of issues but much emphasis will be given to strategies of preventing Fusarium head blight (SCAB) and marketing this year’s crops which are heavily infested with scab and vomitoxin. These issues will be discussed by Dr. Senay Simsek of the Northern Crops Institute, NDSU Crop Quality Specialist and Grain Marketers. Another hot issue on the agenda is grain transportation. Dan Wogsland, Executive Director of the Northern Grain...
Warren Froelich is back in the proverbial saddle. After retiring from the Williams County Extension office last August, Froelich has once again picked up the reins. When asked why he came out of retirement he states simply, “There was just a need. Everyone here was filling in and trying to help but I wanted to alleviate some of the burden for them.” Warren’s wife, Mary, also works as a Family Consumer Science Extension Agent, and clued him in to the strain his absence had made. “There was a need to address the issues of plant and animal life an...
A frequent question this time of year is, “Should I fertilize my lawn in the fall?” The answer is yes. All lawns whether they are high maintenance (Kentucky Bluegrass) or low maintenance (Crested Wheatgrass) will benefit from a fall application, especially the high maintenance usually found in town where they receive supplemental water during the growing season. Fertilizing now will promote vigorous blade growth and stronger root systems. The amount to apply is around one pound of actual nit...
I think this is an appropriate statement for my first weekly Column since retiring exactly one year ago. Also, just a few weeks ago a group of great friends presented me with a beautiful, custom fit, hand tooled saddle as a retirement gift made possible by them and many, many others. The saddle proudly has been displayed at the Williams County Extension Office for people to see and remind me of the kindness so many people have given to me this past year. For that matter, this kindness started...

I was born and raised on an Iowa farm where I worked for my board and room and a little spending money until I was 21 years old after which I received wages of $20 a month for a few months. But it didn't take me long to make up my mind that I would never own a farm of my own at that rate, so I asked for a week's leave and bought a round-trip homeseeker's ticket to Culbertson, Montana. I had seen an advertisement of homesteads there in an eastern paper. As my ticket allowed for stopovers, when I...
The Gossett Post Office was named for Dan Gossett by Mrs. Tom Bone, one of the early settlers on Gossett Flat; however, Gossett never lived in the immediate area. He was an old round-up boss from South Dakota. They came here in 1900, had no children. He acquired a ranch in 1901 that McPeak, the desperado, was killed. The Gossett Post Office was discontinued in 1913 and was transferred to the Charley Clark, Sr., home and called the Clark Post Office. Still later Skaar Post Office was established, and Gossett patrons received their mail on Skaar...

Reflecting on his years, Froelich said the biggest changes have come in agriculture, not in what extension does. “Extension still serves in a diverse capacity, serving the needs of its clientele. The primary objectives of the staff of the Williams County Extension office has been f...
