Warren Froelich is back in the proverbial saddle. After retiring from the Williams County Extension office last August, Froelich has once again picked up the reins. When asked why he came out of retirement he states simply, “There was just a need. A group of local youth attended the National Youth Leadership Initiative this summer held by the Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America. During the conference, the youth learned about strategies for prevention work in communities as well as skills to assess and work as leaders in their community. The Gossett Post Office was named for Dan Gossett by Mrs. Tom Bone, one of the early settlers on Gossett Flat; however, Gossett never lived in the immediate area. He was an old round-up boss from South Dakota. They came here in 1900, had no children. He acquired a ranch in 1901 that McPeak, the desperado, was killed. The Williston Basin Stand Down will be held May 1st, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Williston New Armory, located at 10 Main Street, Williston. The purpose of the stand down is to provide a one-stop shop for services for veterans that are at risk or are currently homeless. North Dakota’s paddlefish snagging season opens May 1 and is scheduled to continue through the end of the month. However, depending on the overall harvest, an early in-season closure may occur with a 24-hour notice issued by the state Game and Fish Department. North Dakota Game and Fish Department fisheries personnel recently stocked seven waters with catchable trout. Jerry Weigel, fisheries development and production section leader, said these trout will provide exciting fall and winter fishing opportunities. “Shasta strain rainbow trout average more than one pound each, with some up to five pounds,” Weigel said.
