North Dakota’s 2015 pronghorn hunting season is set, with 410 licenses available in three open units, according to Jeb Williams, wildlife chief for the State Game and Fish Department. Along with unit 4-A, which was the only open unit in 2014, units 3B and 4C will hold a limited number of licenses. A total of 250 licenses are available in 4-A, 100 in 3B and 60 in 4C. Only 7 percent of soil samples show a moderate to high risk for wheat midge infestation. Soil samples in North Dakota indicate decreased levels of overwintering wheat midge larvae (cocoons) for the 2015 season, according to Janet Knodel, North Dakota State University Extension Service entomologist. Every summer I receive calls asking, “Can I prune trees now or when is a good time to prune?” Unfortunately summer is not the most ideal time. The preferred time is late winter or early spring while the trees are still dormant. This is true for deciduous and coniferous woody plants. Except for pockets in northwest North Dakota there is a decreased level of overwintering wheat midge larvae across the state for the 2015 season. The high risk pockets of 800 to 1200 midge larvae per square meter are concentrated in Mountrail and Divide Counties. Areas with moderate risk of 501-800 midge larvae per square meter are located in only Williams County.
