Farmers and ranchers who suffered severe damage due to the flooding that occurred along the Yellowstone River Valley may be eligible for assistance under the Emergency Conservation Program (ECP) administered by the McKenzie County Farm Service Agency (FSA). For land to be eligible, the natural disaster must create new conservation problems that, if untreated, would: • be so costly to rehabilitate that Federal assistance is or will be needed to return the land to productive agricultural use • is unusual and is not the type that would recur frequ...
As climate change continues to influence Montana rangelands, crops and livestock, as well as pollinators, diseases, pests and weeds, scientists continue to look for ways farmers, ranchers and land managers can adapt to those changes. Dr. Bruce Maxwell, director of the Montana State University’s Institute on Ecosystems, will be discussing some of those options at a special BrownBagger this Friday, April 5, at the USDA- Agricultural Research Service’s Northern Plains Agricultural Research Laboratory (NPARL) in Sidney. Citizen science projects, involving ordinary people in scientific data collection efforts, are increasingly common; but now scientists, such as USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS) Soil Scientist Jeff Herrick, are introducing ways for participants to expand their participation from not just collection, but assessment of data they collect that they can also use for their own needs. One such effort is being featured at a special ARS brownbagger live webinar on Friday, March 1 from noon to 1 pm at the USDA-ARS Northern Plain Agricultural...
