The fall project of Sidney FFA and Agriculture Education students came to a completion recently as Marianne Gartner, Ethan Chamberlain and Ryan Steinbeisser put the finishing touches to the receiving center at Richland Opportunity Inc.. The annual sugar beet harvest began this next week beginning with Culbertson, Savage and the factory yard on Monday, September 30; Sugar Valley and Pleasantview on Tuesday, October 1 and Powder River on October 2. The factory started processing beets on October 1. According to Russ Fullmer, Sidney Sugars agricultural manager, if the weather is still too warm, there will be a controlled harvest to begin with, then it will be “full bore, as quickly as we can”. Brenda Larson and the staff of Creative Solutions are busy putting the final touches on this year’s Parade of Homes which will take place on Sunday, September 29. The project is a fundraiser for the Boys and Girls Club of Richland County to help them fund a much needed permanent home. Last year the event raised $10,000 and Larsen is hoping to increase that amount. Gaffield’s Painting was born 1996 when Sidney area native Kathy Gaffield decided it was time to move from painting friends’ & families’ homes and obtain her contractors license. When Gaffield started painting as a hobby she found she had a knack for it. “I never thought I would do it professionally,” she stated. Savage FFA completed and delivered a new recycle shed for Richland County. It is located at IGA parking lot in Sidney. It replaces an older shed with issues. Richland Opportunity Inc. selected this site for its heavy use and a high traffic area of the county. The funds for this project were made possible through a National FFA Learning to Serve Rural Youth Development Grant. The Savage Senior Citizen organization began the spring of 1973. In the beginning the group met at various churches with 10 to 14 members. In 1976, the new firehall was completed with room to accomodate the senior citizens. In 1979, the organization purchased the Madsen Hardware building. The purchase was realized by a grant, their savings and generous donations. The center is still open at this location today. First graders from Savage Public School proudly present $251.60 that they raised to help Kyler Streib’s family with medical expenses. Kyler is now in his second battle against childhood leukemia and undergoing chemo at the Seattle Children’s Hospital.
