Each fall, just a few weeks after the Richland County Fair & Rodeo wraps, the Richland County Rodeo Club starts knocking on doors, asking for the community's support for the Montana High School Rodeo in Sidney; and boy, does Richland County show up. The tremendous support for both the Pro and High School/Youth Rodeo in Sidney is unique and well-appreciated by the rodeo community. Sidney's event ran Aug. 30-31, with Kraken Oil & Gas, Tri-County Implement, the Cattle-Ac, Clark & Associates-Denver...

He agreed, with the goal of furthering his leadership skills and bringing them back to Eastern Montana to use in the...

Dr. Kessler offered some opinions on Montana’s current Senatorial race between incumbent Tester and Republican Sheehy. While my wife and I are grateful for the excellent and compassionate care we receive in Sidney, we live in Watford City, so Montana’s Senator will represent us only indirectly. None the less, I’d like to make a couple observations on Dr. Kessler’s remarks. I’ve practiced medicine for over 30 years myself, in communities more rural than Sidney, so I’m familiar and concerned about the trends over time. While Tester’s pr...
HELENA – Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks would like to hear from the public about their river recreation experience. A survey is available on the FWP website on the River Recreation Advisory Council page. The rising popularity of river activities in certain areas has led to challenges, such as conflicts among users and different types of recreation. Additionally, FWP has received feedback about congestion on waterways and at access sites. While most agree on the importance of protecting aquatic and terrestrial resources, opinions vary on the b...

Back in June, Montana junior defensive linemen Sloan McPherson did something not many of us would these days: answer a phone call from an unknown number. Fast forward to the last week of August, just as he and the Grizzlies were preparing to take on Missouri State in the season opener, he did something else not many would. And he did it for a good cause. McPherson put the chance to play in one of the few games a college football player gets in life on hold for an opportunity to save someone's...
The Attorney General is Montana’s chief law enforcement officer and leads the Montana Highway Patrol. The person who holds that position should know how to protect Montanans, support officers and understand our constitutional rights. Austin Knudsen has proved, once again, that he is not the right person for the job. An internal survey of the Highway Patrol revealed serious problems with Knudsen’s leadership. Montana is in the middle of a drug crisis and almost half the troopers are not optimistic about the leadership or direction of the age...
As I returned home from my eighth swing through the many small communities of eastern Montana, I was disappointed to learn from the PBS-YPR-Lee Newspapers debate coordinator that Commissioner Downey had not responded to staffing coordination requirements such that the big debate scheduled for Oct. 3 has been cancelled. That’s unfortunate for eastern Montana’s voters. I was looking forward to a cordial exchange of views. From my many visits in eastern Montana it’s become clear to me that people want candidates to make an extra effort on their...

Montanans hold their history close. They take pride in the stories of how their families came to this land. The hardships that they endured and the accomplishments made. J.K Ralston was an artist committed to painting these stories. With painstaking detail, he captured the struggle, the joy, the determination, the sadness of that time and told the stories of what it was like for the pioneers and the native peoples and land. Born in Choteau, MT, in 1896, he knew the stories first hand. Ranching...

BOZEMAN - Artificial intelligence seems to be everywhere these days, from social media apps to the laboratories of Montana State University. Now, thanks in part to a doctoral student in MSU's Gianforte School of Computing, it's in the state's agriculture fields helping farmers take the guesswork out of maximizing crop yields. To a layperson, one field of winter wheat might look just like the one adjacent to it. However, Giorgio Morales, an MSU Ph.D. student from Peru, has the data to show that...
