  • Salmon Anglers Asked to Look for Tag

    Aug 15, 2012

Anglers who catch a tagged salmon are reminded to turn in the heads and report information to the North Dakota Game and Fish Department. Anglers can identify a tagged salmon by looking at the adipose fin – a small fleshy lobe found on the back toward the tail. If the fin is missing it was likely removed by Game and Fish biologists and the salmon probably has a micro-tag embedded in its head. There is no external tag. Micro-tags are inserted into a sample of young salmon before being stocked into Lake Sakakawea and the Missouri River. This m...

The fair in Williams County is actually known as the Upper Missouri Valley Fair (UMVF). I can only assume that its early founders speculated the UMV Fair could involve people beyond the boundaries of Williams County. To some extent, that has become a reality as several of the events involve youth from many...

However, record releases from Garrison and Oahe dams resulted in substantial losses of smelt from the reservoirs during the later stages of summer. Dave Fryda, Missouri River System supervisor for the North Dakota Game and Fish Department, said entrainment rates with the record flows were very high and reduced the smelt population in both reservoirs....

  • 2012 MT Paddlefish Seasons Set To Open

    Apr 25, 2012

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks generally takes a conservative approach to managing the state's paddlefish. This year all paddlefish regulations were consolidated into one location in the 2012 fishing regulations. Fisheries managers in FWP's Regions 6 and 7 say paddlefish reproduction has been poor or absent in recent years due to a variety of environmental factors.
