I am excited to be serving in the Diocese of Billings-Great Falls as Associate Pastor at St. Matthew's in Sidney, Montana. Being here in Montana brings back many memories of my childhood in Vietnam. In 1979, my dad was able to escape war-torn Vietnam and go to America before the rest of our family. My mom, siblings and I were forced to move to a secluded village in the countryside after the Communist government took our home. There we had to travel nearly half a day to get to the city to attend...

The Miles City Fish Hatchery has played host to some very important and unusual visitors for the past month. Three male pallid sturgeons from the Missouri River in Montana, estimated to be up to 80 years old, have been kept in a large holding tank at the facility. They were brought there so that Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks can harvest their milt to fertilize eggs, part of the agency's efforts to bolster this endangered, prehistoric species. Hatchery reproduction and stocking of pallid...
Some of Montana's earliest recorded history played out on the eastern fringes of our state. Through Fort Union, this "Confluence Country" held supremacy over the fur trade business of the Upper Missouri from about 1830 until the 1850s. On April 27, 1805, the Corps of Discovery, after having spent a few days at the joining of the two rivers, (just across the state line in North Dakota), first entered what would become Montana Territory. Meriwether Lewis noted in the expedition journals ... "we sa...

Last summer I planned a trip to neighboring North Dakota and honestly felt a bit ashamed of myself for not having an adventure in this legendary state sooner. Better late than never I suppose, but I can say it was one of our best vacations and we will be returning to do some camping this summer. We spent part of our first day in Medora, checking out the unique little tourist town, filling up on delicious food, and doing a little shopping. This is home to the well-known Medora Musical and...

A fish kill affecting adult rainbow smelt is ongoing in portions of the upper half of Lake Sakakawea, according to Dave Fryda, Missouri River System fisheries supervisor for the North Dakota Game and Fish Department. Fryda said the cause of the die-off has been documented numerous times in North Dakota in the past. “The vast majority of the dead and dying smelt have physical signs of Columnaris bacteria,” said Fryda. “We’ve recovered infected fish from White Earth Bay downstream to Deepwater Bay and Van Hook Arm.” Columnaris bacteria are prese...
Paddlefish anglers with a yellow harvest tag that are anxious to fish on the Yellowstone River or Missouri River downstream of Fort Peck Reservoir in 2016 need to be aware of two issues. First, for anglers with a yellow paddlefish harvest tag, opening day of paddlefish season is Sunday May 15; however the first harvest day is Tuesday May 17. This oddity of opening day results from designated Catch and Release days (Sunday, Monday, and Thursday) and mandatory Catch and Harvest days (Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday). Thus, in 2016, the...
The North Dakota Game and Fish Department closed the state’s 2016 regular paddlefish snagging season, effective at 9 p.m. Central Daylight Time, on Monday, May 9. Snaggers are reminded that Sunday and Monday are snag-and-release only. The 2016-18 fishing proclamation allows for the Game and Fish director to close the snagging season early if it appears the harvest will exceed 1,000 paddlefish. “Snaggers this year have been extremely successful,” said Greg Power, fisheries chief. “In addition, similar to last year, a high proportion of this ye...

A paddlefish tag is required to participate in North Dakota’s paddlefish snagging season, which opens May. 1 and is scheduled to continue through the end of May. However, depending on the overall harvest, an early in-season closure may occur with a 24-hour notice issued by the state Game and Fish Department. Snag-and-release of all paddlefish is required on Sundays, Mondays and Thursdays; therefore, the first two days of the 2016 snagging season will be snag-and-release only. Mandatory harvest of all snagged paddlefish is required on T...
If you are someone who is looking to move, whether it be across town or someplace new, there can be a lot of different aspects when it comes to selling your house. One of these aspects is "staging" your home to be appealing to potential buyers. The Roundup talked to Amanda Seigfreid with Seigfreid Insurance and Real Estate, who works with Missouri River Reality, on what it takes to stage a home. Staging Your Home While Still Living In It "There's a lot of common sense things that should be taken...

You know you are an introvert if you find crowds stressful, have a hard time meeting new people and you just kind of like to sit back with a good book or your phone and TV and do absolutely nothing. You know you are an introvert if you are courteous, a good friend and have an old soul. You know you are an introvert if are balanced; balancing alone time and socializing, an opportunity to have fun without burning out. But, when it comes to Spring Break season, a lot of introverts seem to miss out...

Terry Murphy, a Richland County Compliance Officer since 2012, has some interesting theories when it comes to the Pallid sturgeon. Murphy spends two weeks on in Sidney, MT as the Richland County Compliance Officer and two weeks off at home in St. Ignatius, MT, and enjoys the many recreational opportunities that Eastern Montana has to offer. One of these activities is fishing in the Yellowstone River and the Missouri River. This past year, Murphy has been able to catch two pallid sturgeons. The...
