Cody Gibson shot this elk north of Winnette Sept. 17. He had to hike six miles one way and watched the herd of about 80 head for 1½ hours. He watched this bull elk bugle and chase off 6-7 other bull elk. The Second Annual Eastern Montana Stand Down for veterans will take place at the Sidney Fairgrounds Event Center on Sept. 17. The Sidney Job Service along with the Miles City, Glendive, Glasgow and Wolf Point Job Service Offices are hosting this year’s event. Local volunteer fire departments kept busy on Thursday, Aug. 11 fighting three grass fires that broke out between Savage and Intake. A Burlington Northern train passing through the area started all three fires when sparks from the wheels ignited dry grass along the tracks. Reports from a few Montana locations indicate EHD has surfaced in the resident white-tailed deer populations. The rupture and release of 42,000 gallons of crude oil from an Exxon pipeline beneath the Yellowstone River brings home to Montanans the need for improved oversight and careful planning of the Keystone XL pipeline.
