Registration will start at 3:30 p.m. followed by the tour at 4 p.m. The tour will include NDSU Extension specialists and...
Since 2014, Sidney has had a community garden that provides a space for individuals to grow fresh produce, learn more about gardening, and to participate in outdoor activities. The idea for the community garden came from a public input meeting that was organized by the Richland County Communities in Action group. People of Richland County were concerned about the little access to fresh produce by citizens, so they felt that implementing a community garden would help address those needs. "At the...
The Montana State University Eastern Agricultural Research Center has been harvesting sugar beet plots since Monday, Sept. 21. Chengci Chen, MSU EARC superintendent and cropping systems agronomist, explained that harvest has been going smoothly for the center thus far. The weather conditions from this year have affected harvest in both a positive and negative way. "The dry and warm weather makes harvesting easier for us. However, the abnormally warm weather in September is not ideal for sugar...

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year's North Dakota State University (NDSU) Williston Research Extension Center (WREC) Dryland and Irrigated Field Days will be conducted online. NDSU WREC staff members have prepared short pre-recorded videos that include information on dryland and irrigation research being performed at the research center. These videos will be available for viewers to watch on July 8 at www.ag.ndsu.edu/willistonrec. Researchers will be discussing a variety of topics during th...
While COVID-19 has prompted the cancellation of the annual onsite Froid Research Farm Field Day typically held in late June, two live webinars are planned to provide interested participants with important information on range and cropland weeds in the MonDak with a special emphasis on identifying and preventing the introduction of Palmer amaranth in Montana, a dangerous herbicide resistant crop weed that has recently made its way into North Dakota. The webinars were originally scheduled for successive Thursdays, but have now been moved to the...
As is true for so many similar events, the annual Froid Research Farm Field Day typically scheduled for late June has been converted from an on-the-ground event to a new virtual tour due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Scientists and staff with the USDA-ARS Northern Plains Agricultural Research Laboratory in Sidney made the announcement Monday. In addition, the joint Sidney Dryland Field Day with Sidney ARS and Montana State University’s Eastern Ag Research Center (EARC), also held in June, has been cancelled for this year and will return a...
Local research results ready to roll out in your fields will be featured at the upcoming third annual MonDak Ag Research Summit in Sidney, Thursday December 12. But that’s not all. Several outside speakers are also planned to address timely questions producers have on our long term erratic weather patterns (10 inches of rain in September!) and what it means for spring planting, as well as feeding weather damaged grain to livestock, and tips on managing irrigation equipment. Addressing the first two issues is Dr. Kevin Hyde, coordinator of t...
As 2019 nears a close, farmers and ranchers have a lot of questions: What's the deal with this weather? What do we need to brace for next? What can be done with all that damaged grain? What about disease....white mold? Fusarium? And what about new crop options to help battle low prices...Kernza, Hemp? Can these crops be adapted here? How do we manage them, and what about markets? These and many other questions will be addressed during the 3rd Annual MonDak Ag Research Summit to be held...

Industrial hemp farming has become increasingly popular. Farmers that are growing hemp are seeing both a demand and profit increase, while farmers who have never grown hemp before are rushing to plant it in their fields. The production of industrial hemp in the United States was made possible in December 2018 when President Donald Trump signed the Farm Bill into law; the legislation removed hemp from the government's controlled drug category, stimulating a surge in demand for cannabidiol (CBD),...
Among the many presentations at this year's field day, Drs. Chengci Chen and Apurba Sutradhar discussed industrial hemp as a potential crop for Eastern Montana. Pictured is Dr. Chen with a sample crop of industrial hemp which was approved in the 2018 farm bill. Chen covered potential hemp varieties as well as agronomic practices such as seeding date, fertility rates and when to harvest....

The first days of summer have come and gone. Now, it is time for the field days, the Montana State University Research Center Field Days. Every year, through June and July, the MSU Eastern Agricultural Research Center in Sidney, Montana participates, along with other MSU Research Centers across Montana, in the Field Days program. During a Field Day, farmers and the general public are invited to come to the research station to go on a tour of the facility, learn about the researchers, places and...
At the upcoming EARC irrigated field day I will be discussing problematic weeds and one weed in particular that may potentially be a problem for us down the road, Palmer Amaranth. In a June edition of the NDSU Crop and Pest Report (https://www.ag.ndsu.edu/cpr) this weed was addressed. "In 2018, Palmer amaranth was found in five North Dakota counties. We believe Palmer was introduced into the state through sunflower screenings, contaminated seed, custom combines, used combines purchased from...

Montana State University's Eastern Agricultural Research Center (EARC) and the USDA-Agricultural Research Service's (ARS) Northern Plains Ag Research Lab in Sidney held a joint field day on June 20. The field day was held at Sidney ARS research farm located about 4 miles north of Sidney off MT Highway 16. Tour talks included a Weed ID talk looking at common herbicide resistant crop weeds in dryland agriculture as well as new weed arrivals, such as Palmar amaranth, identified in North Dakota this...
On Wednesday, July 10th at the Williston Research Extension Center (WREC), Gautam Pradhan, WREC's Dryland Research Agronomist, will be demonstrating how to use an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) and sharing information about UAV's performance on crop production and precision field management at the WREC's Dryland Field Day. The project Pradhan will be speaking on includes the applicability of UAV based high throughput phenotyping in the identification of drought tolerant cereal genotypes. "We...
Farmers and ranchers wage a continuous battle with weeds in their crops and pastures, battles that have grown fiercer with new weed species popping up and the development of herbicide resistance in existing weeds. Knowing your enemy is key for combating resistance and preventing introduction of new species and area producers have an opportunity to brush up on their weed skills at the 2019 Froid Research Farm Field Day on Thursday, June 27, from 1-5 p.m. The day's program features discussions on...
Farmers and ranchers wage a continuous battle with weeds in their crops and pastures, battles that are often compounded by the arrival of new weed species and the development of herbicide resistance in existing weeds. Knowing your enemy is a key component for combating resistance and preventing introduction of new weed species. Producers will have two opportunities to hone their identification skills at field days being conducted later this month in Sidney and Froid, along with learning about other dryland research underway in this area. The...
ACH Seeds has enjoyed success in the sugarbeet industry due to constant research, developing varieties with excellent tonnage and sugar content as well as Yield Strength Rhizomania Tolerance, Fusarium, Aphanomyces, Rhizoctonia and Cercospora tolerance along with nematode resistance in select varieties. Crystal Beet Seed produced for the US markets is grown in Oregon and Washington, and processed in Oregon or Minnesota, depending on the market area. Along with their own proprietary testing,...

Educational opportunities abound for sugarbeet growers eager to keep up on the latest information in their field. From Ag Days and the EARC Field Days in Sidney to symposiums in Billings and Fargo, resources that enhance production are readily available. The newly formed Montana State Crop Education Association hosted the Malt Barley and Sugarbeet Symposium in Billings on January 8 and 9, 2019. Sidney Sugars agriculturalist Kathryn Cayko is a member of the association and attended the symposium. She said it was really successful this year with...
