Several fields have been sampled for beet cyst nematodes, because they are known to occur in the area, but not to what extent. In the samples thus far analyzed...

As was feared, the Orange Wheat Blossom Midge has been found in Richland County. Pheromone traps that were placed in fields by staff at the EARC have been capturing an increasing number of this potentially serious wheat pest. The photograph below shows a trap taken from a field in Richland County. If you are a wheat producer, it is imperative that you scout your fields for the pest. A recommended method for scouting is to go into your field at dusk as the midge adults (if there are any present)...

Your support, whether in person or by written comment, is vital to ensure the continuation of irrigation and the economic vitality of our community. Even though this issue should be cut and dried, it is not. Public meetings and comment will determine whether the proposed fish friendly concrete weir and fish bypass at Intake are approved to begin construction. Federal agencies and state leaders are actively analyzing the level of public support vs protest. There will be opposition shown at the meeting in Glendive and political leaders including...
With the hint of spring weather in the air, green thumb enthusiasts are busy laying out their plans for this year's gardening season. They are choosing their seeds, checking their garden beds and visualizing the edible and beautiful results that will eventually stem from the fruits of their labor. But for some, indulging their green thumb and growing a garden is not possible where they are living. Whether it's because there's too much concrete, not enough space, not enough sun, or lack of...

At the age of six, Karen Redlin started gardening with her mother in their home garden. “Everyone had to work and be a part of the garden in our family,” she recalls. Five decades later, she integrates what her mother taught her years ago with what she believes is the best way to garden today; naturally. “I have always felt that chemicals alter the soil and the chemistry in our bodies. That is why I grow everything as naturally as possible,” she said. On Jan. 10, Redlin will be giving a seminar...
Cover crops have been around for a long time. Until recent years, no one gave them much thought. That is changing. According to Ann Ronning, Roosevelt County Extension Agent, the concept of cover crops dates back hundreds of years. “It really went by the wayside after WWII with the development of synthetic fertilizers and chemicals. Prior to the War, cover crops were used to help prevent soil erosion and to add fertility to the soil,” she said. Today, researchers are looking at the pot...

The following students are shown finishing landscaping and cleanup of the site: (left to right) Daria Anderson, Jeremy Rhines,...
Barley is a term that many of us correlate, depending on its use, with food, feed or drink; barley malt being the most widely used form world wide. It is part of the grass family and one of the most popular cereal crops. While grown in many regions, barley is a tender grain that must be handled with care, especially to earn improved malting qualities. That means more taste variances for us to sample at the local pub and the enhanced benefit of food production that comes from the genetic research...

All signs still point to an above average sugarbeet crop. Soil samples taken last week were the second best in the past five years according to Sidney Sugars agriculturalist Russ Fullmer. The next root samples will be taken the second week in August. Farmers are irrigating regularly and Fullmer says they will need to keep the crop wet until harvest. Although the crop looks good overall, there has been some hail damage including 88 acres north of Glendive that were severely damaged, 740 acres by...
