    The Flags of Honor Committee, along with volunteers from the Sidney Lions Club and other volunteers, will post 130 flags around Veterans Park beginning at 6:00 a.m. Flags posted will begin with “Ted Goss” and end at “John Miller”. People carrying flags in that group can take the flag and go to the VFW Club beginning at 10:00. People wanting flags from the Flags of Honor room must sign out the flag before taking it.     Sheila L. Coulter (Schwegel) was born and raised in Kalispell, MT. After graduating from high school in 1997 she enlisted in the United States Air Force. She served in the Financial Management and Comptroller career field and was stationed in Denver, CO, San Antonio, TX, Osan, South Korea and Lakenheath, United Kingdom.     The VFW and Ladies Auxiliary to the VFW offer a Voice of Democracy oral/essay scholarship which gives the winner an opportunity to win $30,000. The program is open to students in grades 9-12 who are enrolled in a public, private, or home study program in the United States and its territories. Students must submit a 3-5 minute CD recording based on the theme: “Why I’m Optimistic About our Nation’s Future”. Entries begin at the Post level, with the local winning essay receiving $100.     It has been observed that several flags are being flown that are tattered and in need of replacement. Such flags can be taken to the VFW and they, in turn, will have them properly disposed of by the Boy Scouts. The Flags of Honor program consists of 618 donated casket flags. The majority of the flags are from veterans in this area, and others are from family members who donated them to be with fellow veterans.     Sidney is home to a unique program called “The Flags of Honor” which originated in 1965. This program originally began as a community effort with members of 13 civic organizations who made the decision to ask members of the community to donate any casket flags from deceased veterans. The organizers were able to obtain 83 flags for the first Memorial Day parade in 1966.
