    Steve Merritt|Oct 29, 2014

The Montana Department of Livestock is reminding hunters that horses are required to have a brand inspection before crossing county lines. According to Montana Code 81-3-211 (2), it is “unlawful to remove or cause to be removed…any livestock…unless the livestock have been inspected for brands by a state stock inspector or deputy state stock inspector and a certificate of the inspection has been issued…for the purpose of the transportation.” “It’s a pretty common violation during hunting season,” said John Grainger, Brands Enforcement Div...

The Montana Department of Livestock’s Brands Enforcement Division recovered and returned 4,630 head of lost, stolen and strayed livestock, worth $6.4 million, to their rightful owners in 2013. That’s a return to producers of nearly $2 for every dollar the division spends, said Christian Mackay, executive officer for the Montana Board of Livestock. “Helping resolve ownership issues is one of our core responsibilities, and we’ve been at it a long time,” Mackay said. Over the past 10 years, the department – the state’s oldest law enforcement a...

  • Equine Owners Encouraged to Consult with Vets on West Nile Virus Vaccination

    Steve Merritt|May 7, 2014

Montana’s animal health officials are encouraging equine owners to consult with their veterinarians about vaccination for West Nile virus after a spike in the number of cases last year. “We had 32 cases last year, the most since 2007, and the third highest total in the nation,” said assistant state veterinarian Dr. Tahnee Szymanski. “That’s concerning because the disease is highly preventable.” Based on MDOL data, no equines that were current on vaccinations have ever contracted the disease in Montana. In contrast, one-third of the non-vaccina...

  • State, National Park Service to Develop New Bison Management Plan

    Steve Merritt|Apr 2, 2014

The National Park Service (NPS) and the State of Montana (State) have agreed to prepare a joint Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to consider possible changes for managing wild Yellowstone bison and the non-native disease brucellosis. The process will allow the NPS and the State to account for substantial new information and changed circumstances since the implementation of the Interagency Bison Management Plan (IBMP) began in 2001, and could result in the creation of a plan to replace the IBMP. The NPS and the State will be working within...

    Steve Merritt|Apr 2, 2014

The state's first rabies quarantine of 2014, issued last week for Big Horn County, should serve as a good reminder for pet owners to review vaccination records for their dogs, cats and ferrets. "It's that time of year," said assistant state veterinarian Dr. Tahnee Szymanski. "If your pet hasn't been vaccinated recently, or if you aren't sure, contact your veterinarian and get it taken care of now." Based on statistics from the past three years, rabies generally makes an appearance in early...

  • Porcine Epidemic Virus (PED) Found in Montana

    Steve Merritt|Mar 5, 2014

According to the USDA, infected piglets less than 7 days old may have a mortality rate of about 50 percent. The mortality rate in suckling pigs may reach 50 to 80 percent, but then typically declines to 1 to 3 percent in larger pigs. Most older swine recover without treatment unless secondary infections occur. Test results have confirmed Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus (PED) at a swine production facility in Montana. “Add Montana to the list of states hit by the virus,” said state veterinarian Dr. Marty Zaluski after receiving laboratory con...

    Steve Merritt|Jan 29, 2014

The Montana Department of Revenue’s Property Assessment Division mailed out property reporting forms earlier this month, and livestock owners should already have received their forms. “If you own livestock in Montana, you’re responsible for reporting the number owned and should receive a reporting form,” said Christian Mackay, executive officer for the Montana Board of Livestock. Livestock owners simply fill the form out by reporting the number of livestock owned on February 1 and return it to the local Department of Revenue office in the cou...
