    Katelyn Sponheim|Jul 5, 2023

Former Sidney resident, Cye Franzen, recently was crowned Texas Junior High State Champion Bronc Rider and Rookie of the Year. I caught up with him on the road to Nationals in Perry, GA. For his wins in Texas; Franzen took home a saddle, eight buckles, and several other prizes. While a competitor always hopes to add to their winnings, especially after an 18-hour drive to Nationals, he was looking forward to some sight-seeing as well. Little Rock, AR, and the ocean were two he wanted to experience. At the junior high level of rodeo, bronc...

  • Century Of Rodeo Tradition In Killdeer

    Katelyn Sponheim|Jun 28, 2023

A hundred years is a long time to keep a great show going, but Killdeer has been doing exactly that as of 2023. Sam Rhoades started the event in 1924 with true wild horses off the Porter and McCloud ranches, but today Sparky at J Bar J Pro Rodeo, Circle, MT, and Pickett Pro Rodeo, Fairfield, TX, supply the roughstock. While the rodeo evolving from a wild show of cowboy ability to a professional rodeo on the PRCA Badlands circuit isn’t a new change, there are plenty of new events this year! Kicking off July 1 at 12 p.m. with the Killdeer Mountai...

    Katelyn Sponheim|Jun 7, 2023

Austin Caruthers, Williston Basin Speedway president, has been involved with racing most of his life. This may be his first year as president, but it's his third racing, and he plans on continuing to race full time. He credits his ability to do both to Williston Basin Speedway's dedicated board members, who work together to keep things functioning smoothly. Dirt track racing is incredibly demanding of its drivers and those that support them, and Austin said this about his passion. "It's one of...
