  • Prairie Fare: How Do You Define These Food and Agriculture Terms?

    Julie Garden Robinson|Jun 4, 2014

I overheard an interesting conversation the other day. I don't make it a practice of eavesdropping, but they were talking rather loudly nearby. My ears perked when the topic moved to food. "I'm going gluten-free because I need to lose some weight," one of them said. "I gained weight when I went gluten-free," the other noted. "Really?" she replied with surprise. I wanted to jump in and agree that gluten-free isn't necessarily a weight-loss diet, but I ate my breakfast and read the newspaper. As...

  • Prairie Fare: Vision and Nutrition Sometimes Are Connected

    Julie Garden Robinson|Oct 3, 2012

If you or someone you know is experiencing issues with low vision, consider some ways to help yourself or that person with food preparation. “Mom, I can read the sign across the street!” my 9-year-old daughter exclaimed as she stepped outside wearing her purple-framed glasses for the first time. A few weeks prior to that day, she came home from school with a note after a vision screening. We needed to make an appointment with an optometrist. She giggled and said, “Oh, I meant Audrey II. She’s outside in the garden climbing over the fence.” Now it made sense. I realized she was referring to the movie character Audrey, the massive carnivorous plant from the musical “Little Shop of Horrors.” My daughter has been watching videos on YouTube and singing the songs around our home. I wasn’t sure I wante...

“Mom, milk break is done this week at school, so I will need something to drink and 24 birthday treats to share with everyone because my birthday is in the summer. Why does my birthday have to be in the summer, anyway?” my 8-year-old daughter exclaimed. I think she delivered all this “end of the school year” and “don’t forget my birthday” information in one breath. “Sure, we can buy a snack for an early birthday party at school,” I replied. “We can have milk breaks at home, too,” I added. “Did you know that a cow drinks 30 to 50 gallons of wat...

“No onions on my sandwich, please.” my eight-year-old daughter said. I was chopping onions and other vegetables as I assembled panini sandwiches to cook on our electric sandwich grill. “How about just a little onion for flavor?” I asked. “Remember the customer is always right, and this customer doesn’t like onions!” she exclaimed. My little “customer” has eaten more finely minced onions without knowing it than she could ever imagine. “Well, I don’t allow barefoot customers in my kitchen when I create my special sandwiches,” I noted. I was tryin...
