    Students and the kitchen staff at East Fairview School were thrilled to start the school year in their newly remodeled building while administration moved in over the Christmas break. The original school burned down in 1922 at which time the two-story building was erected. The wing housing the elementary, offices, kitchen, and cafeteria were built in 1954.     Sidney farmer Devin Bell earned a spot with the top soybean growers in the country in the Go for the Gold Soybean Yield Contest sponsored by Golden Harvest Soybeans. His test plot of 20 acres of Golden Harvest soybean GH 0502XF yielded 69.51 bushels per acre, about two bushels more than his other varieties. “It was the highest yields I’ve ever had,” Bell said. Otterstetter, who is employed by Horizon Resources, fell ill on Oct. 26, 2023 and ended up being life flighted to Billings with seizures and a sub-dural hematoma.   • Discovery of 100-Year-Old Signed Quilt Blocks Prompts Questions

    Pristine quilt blocks crafted 100 years ago were discovered recently in an old trunk, which belonged to life-long Girard resident Mary Helen (Daniels) Arneson. She was born in 1921 and hadn't made a block so they must have been in the company of her mother Junia Cole Daniels. Junia was married to George who homesteaded the current Arneson place in 1908.
